Lycoris (リコリス, Lycoris^? ) is a minor but important character in the Shuffle series. She was the clone of Nerine who met Rin when she visited the Human world.

Background

Lycoris is the second clone made by Project Yggdrasil, a combined effort by both Devils and Gods to create a sentient being with an enormous amount of magical energy. Since the first attempt failed due to lack of ability to hold such vast magical powers, they believed the God of Devils' daughter, Nerine, made the perfect candidate. The cloning was successful, and the clone was named Lycoris.

The color of the eyes distinguished Nerine and Lycoris; Nerine has red eyes, while Lycoris's were purple. Yet, unlike her progenitor, Lycoris had a wonderful gift for singing, dubbed as the "Angel's Bell."

During a trip to the Human World, Lycoris met Rin and fell in love with him at first sight. On returning home, she told Primula all about him; this, in turn, makes Primula grows curious about Rin and personally want to meet him.

The cloning technology at that time was inadequate, and in addition, Lycoris's underdeveloped body had forcibly infused with abundant magical power; all these factors shortened her life. On the verge of death, Lycoris saved a terminally ill Nerine by assimilating with her. As a result, Nerine is healed and inherits Lycoris' feelings and singing voice. Moreover, unlike Sia, this merging process did not lead her to develop multiple personalities. Before she merged with Nerine, Lycoris gave Primula the stuffed cat toys, a gift from Rin.

To fulfill Lycoris' last wish, Nerine goes to the Human World to meet Rin.

Character Relationships

• Rin: While on a trip to the Human world, Lycoris fell in love with Rin at first sight. He gave her the stuffed cat toys that she later gives to Primula.
• Nerine: Lycoris' progenitor, from whom she was cloned. She cared about Nerine so much, that she merged with Nerine to save her life, knowing that she, herself, would disappear. After merging, Nerine obtained Lycoris' memories and singing talent.
• Primula: Lycoris' friend in the laboratory where they were created. Lycoris was like an older sister to Primula and, before she died, she gave her the stuffed cats toys that Rin had given her, which is why Primula treasures them.

Trivia

• Much like the rest of the characters in Shuffle, Lycoris' name is based off a flower by the same name, commonly found in East Asia.
• Like the other experiments of Project Yggdrasil, Lycoris had purple eyes.
• Though her physical form ceased to exist during the time of her death, Lycoris is a hidden character in Tick! Tack.
• Though mentioned continuously throughout the anime, Lycoris doesn't make a physical appearance.
  • For an example, she is mentioned in episode 13 when The King of Devils mentions her to Nerine and again when Primula tells Rin why she came to see him.
