Ruri Matsuri (瑠璃＝マツリ, Matsuri Ruri^? ) is a side character in the Shuffle series. She appears in Shuffle Essence+ and Shuffle! Love Rainbow as a winnable heroine.

Appearance

Ruri is a fair skinned female elf with lapis eyes and long pale cinnamon hair. Her head attire is a black headband.

Her Verbena Academy uniform features a simple white sailor collar with brown lining and puffy sleeves, chuffed also with brown lining. Her sailor is a layer with a long brown vest buttoned up. Her shirt is also white with brown lining, and a light gray underskirt can be shown. Her uniform is finished off with a big bright yellow bow in the middle of the sailor, white cotton frilly tights and black mary jane shoes.

Her winter uniform is mostly the same except, the sailor collar, now long-sleeved, and vest have merged into one piece. Both top and skirt alike are brown now. Her hat with a similar color scheme is also worn by students such as Kaede.

Personality

She is the student council president of Verbena Academy, she rarely appears in public except for classes and the work of the student organization because she is not good at socializing, seeming outwardly very cold. However once Rin gets to know her, she has a very pleasant and serene personality. She has the traits of a classic coodere.

When she is dressed as a man, she can speak calmly and straight-forward, unlike normally, when she is nervous and unable to speak properly.

Background

Ruri is a third-year student at Verbena Academy, the class is next to Asa and Kareha. She is half human and God. Kareha is a friend and her classmate from a previous school year. Asa and she are friends, and it is with her help that Asa is able to avoid the red dot in the magic test.

Ruri is a member of Sia's personal guards from the Realm of Gods. She is a skilled user of the swordsmanship of the divine world called "Kamiken Ito-ryu".

Her mother is a human who has been spirited away and transferred to the divine world before the opening of the gate and is the youngest daughter of a famous family. Her father was a former guard in the divine world, and he moved to the human world because he volunteered to be a guard in the human world when the gate was opened 10 years ago. She has a younger brother and older sister who have the same exact face as her.

She prefers wearing the boys' uniform over the girls' one. When she first meets Rin, she is introduced as "Matsuri" because she is crossdressing, though consciously, Rin could tell she was a female. The boys' uniform belongs to her younger brother.

During her route in Shuffle! Love Rainbow, she graduates from high school.

Etymology

• The name Ruri means "lapis lazuli" (瑠璃).
• Ruri's surname Matsuri is written in katakana (マツリ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (祭, 茉莉, 万都梨 or 真津梨), it could possibly mean:
  • 祭 - "festival, ritual, offer prayers, celebrate, deify, enshrine/enshrining, worship".
  • 茉莉 - "Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac)".
  • 万都梨 - "ten thousand, myriads, all" (万) (ma), "metropolis, capital" (都) (tsu) and "pear" (梨) (ri).
  • 真津梨 - "real, genuine" (真) (ma), "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu) and "pear" (梨) (ri).
